Understanding 2-Step Algebra Word Problems
2-step algebra word problems are mathematical “stories” that require two distinct operations to find an unknown value. Typically, these problems follow a consistent structure: a starting amount is divided or multiplied, and then a constant value is added or subtracted.

The Step-by-Step Solution Strategy
To solve these, we use Inverse Operations (doing the opposite) in reverse order of operations (reverse PEMDAS).
Step A: Undo the “Floating” Number (Addition/Subtraction)
Before you can deal with the variable’s group, you must remove the constant that is added or subtracted.
Rule: If the problem adds 5, you subtract 5 from both sides.
Step B: Undo the “Attached” Number (Multiplication/Division)
Now that the variable term is alone, you isolate it.
Rule: If the variable is divided by 4, you multiply both sides by 4.
