2-digit Game (Column Subtraction)

This game focuses on subtracting a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number, with logic to handle cases involving borrowing (regrouping) and cases without it. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 2-digit Subtractor Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Borrowing” or “With Borrowing”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Subtract the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the borrow digit at the top of the ones place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your borrow digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new subtraction problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

Subtracting 2-Digit Numbers
Subtracting two 2-digit numbers (like 85 - 23) follows the same logic as 1-digit subtraction, but now you have an active subtraction step in both the Ones and the Tens columns.

Vertical Alignment
Always stack the numbers vertically. The “Minuend” (the number you start with) goes on top, and the “Subtrahend” (the number you are taking away) goes on the bottom.

Scenario A: No Borrowing
If every digit on the top is larger than the digit directly below it, you simply subtract column by column, starting from the right.
Example: 76 - 34
Ones Column: 6 - 4 = 2. Write 2 in the ones place.
Tens Column: 7 - 3 = 4. Write 4 in the tens place.
Result: 42.

Scenario B: Borrowing (Regrouping)
If the bottom number in the Ones column is larger than the top number, you must regroup from the Tens.
Example: 52 - 28
Step 1: Check the Ones
We cannot do 2 - 8. We need to borrow 1 Ten from the 5.
The 5 in the Tens place becomes a 4.
The 2 in the Ones place becomes 12 (10 + 2).
Step 2: Subtract the Columns
Ones: 12 - 8 = 4.
Tens: 4 - 2 = 2.

Special Case: Subtracting Across Zero
If the top number has a zero in the ones place (like 60 - 27):
Borrow from the 6 (it becomes 5).
The 0 becomes a 10.
10 - 7 = 3.
5 - 2 = 3.
Result: 33.

Summary Checklist

  1. Line up the columns (Ones under Ones, Tens under Tens).
  2. Start at the Right (the Ones column).
  3. Borrow if the top digit is smaller than the bottom.
  4. Subtract the Tens last.
  5. Check by adding your answer to the bottom number.
