2-digit - 1-digit Game (Column Subtraction)

This game focuses on subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number, with logic to handle cases involving borrowing (regrouping) and cases without it. Scroll down the page for a more detailed explanation.

How to Play the 2-digit - 1-digit Column Subtractor Game

  1. Select Difficulty: Select “No Borrowing” or “With Borrowing”.
  2. Enter Your Answer: Subtract the digits in columns from right to left. Typing a number automatically moves the cursor to the next column to the left. If you chose regrouping then be careful to regroup when necessary. You can put the borrow digit at the top of the ones place to help you remember. (Take note that the game will not check your borrow digit)
  3. Check Your Work: Click the green Check button (or press the Enter key). The game will tell you if you’re correct. If you are wrong, you will be asked to try again.
  4. Get a New Problem: Click the Next button (or press Enter again) for a new subtraction problem.
Your score is tracked at the top, showing how many you’ve gotten right out of the total you’ve tried.

Subtracting 1-Digit from 2-Digit Numbers
When you subtract a 1-digit number (like 7) from a 2-digit number (like 45), the most important thing is to keep your columns straight.

Simple Subtraction (No Borrowing)
If the digit in the Ones place of the big number is larger than the 1-digit number, you just subtract normally.
Example: 28 - 5
Ones: 8 - 5 = 3.
Tens: 2 - 0 = 2.
Result: 23.
Subtraction with Borrowing (Regrouping)
If the 1-digit number is larger than the digit in the Ones place, you need to “borrow” from the Tens place.
Example: 42 - 7
The Problem:
In the ones column, you can’t do 2 - 7 without getting a negative number. We need more “ones."
The Solution:
Borrow from the Tens: Take one ten from the 4. The 4 becomes a 3.
Move it to the Ones: That ten becomes 10 ones. Add them to your 2. Now you have 12 ones.
Subtract the Ones: 12 - 7 = 5.
Subtract the Tens: The 4 is now a 3. 3 - 0 = 3.
Final Answer: 35.

Things to Remember

  1. The “Counting Up” Method: If borrowing feels confusing, put the small number in your head and count up to the big one. For 12 - 7, count: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. You counted 5 times.
  2. Check with Addition: You can always check your answer by adding it back. If 35 + 7 = 42, you know your subtraction was correct.
  3. Keep it Neat: If you don’t line up the ones column perfectly, you might accidentally subtract from the tens place.
