Understanding 1-Step Algebra Word Problems
A 1-step algebra problem is an equation that requires only one mathematical operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) to find the value of the unknown variable, usually called \(x\).
When these are presented as word problems, the challenge is translating a “story” into a math sentence.
ย

The Strategy: “The Inverse”
To solve any 1-step problem, you must perform the inverse operation (the opposite) to get the variable by itself.
If you see: Addition (+)
Use the Inverse: Subtraction (-)

If you see: Subtraction (-)
Use the Inverse: Addition (+)

If you see: Multiplication (ร—)

The Four Types of Scenarios
A. Addition Scenarios
The Story: You have an initial amount, you gain more, and you know the final total.
Clue Words: Plus, sum, increased by, more than, total.
Example: “You have x dollars. You found $5 and now have $12."
Equation: x + 5 = 12
Step: Subtract 5 from 12. (x = 7)

B. Subtraction Scenarios
The Story: You started with an amount, some was lost or spent, and you know what remains.
Clue Words: Less than, spent, decreased by, difference, left.
Example: “You spent $8 from your savings (x) and have $20 left."
Equation: x - 8 = 20
Step: Add 8 to 20. (x = 28)

C. Multiplication Scenarios
The Story: You have multiple groups of the same size, or a “rate” (like price per item).
Clue Words: Times, product, each, per, twice.
Example: “Three friends each paid x dollars to buy a $21 pizza."
Equation: 3x = 21
Step: Divide 21 by 3. (x = 7)

D. Division Scenarios
The Story: A large total is being split equally into a specific number of groups.
Clue Words: Divided by, split, shared, half, quarter.
Example: “A bag of candy (x) is split among 4 people. Each gets 5 pieces."
Equation: \(\frac{x}{4} = 5\)
Step: Multiply 5 by 4. (x = 20)
