Properties of Polygons

A series of free High School Geometry Video Lessons from Brightstorm.

Kite Properties
Knowing the properties of a kite will help when solving problems with missing sides and angles. Kite properties include (1) two pairs of consecutive, congruent sides, (2) congruent non-vertex angles and (3) perpendicular diagonals. Other important polygon properties to be familiar with include trapezoid properties, rhombus, and rectangle and square properties.

Trapezoid Properties
Trapezoids are one of the most common quadrilaterals. A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides. When a trapezoid has two sets of parallel sides, it is a more specific type of trapezoid called a parallelogram. A more specific type of trapezoid is called an isosceles trapezoid. In addition to one pair of parallel sides, isosceles trapezoid properties include congruent legs, base angles and diagonals.

Triangle Midsegment Properties
A midsegment is the line segment connecting the midpoints of two sides of a triangle. Since a triangle has three sides, each triangle has three midsegments. A triangle midsegment is parallel to the third side of the triangle and is half of the length of the third side. Another important set of polygon midsegment properties to be familiar with are trapezoid midsegment properties.

Trapezoid Midsegment Properties
A midsegment of a trapezoid is the line segment connecting the midpoints of the two non-parallel sides of a trapezoid. A trapezoid midsegment is parallel to the set of parallel lines in a trapezoid and is equal to the average of the lengths of the bases. A trapezoid midsegment is related to a triangle midsegment given that both of their lengths are proportional to the bases.
