Subtraction Strategies

The following are some subtraction strategies:

  1. Counting Up (Think Addition)
This strategy is great for finding the difference between two numbers. Instead of starting with the larger number and subtracting, you start with the smaller number and add your way up to the larger one.
  2. Breaking Apart
This strategy involves breaking down the number you are subtracting into smaller, more manageable pieces.
  3. Using a Number Line
A number line gives you a visual way to count. You can either jump backward for subtraction or jump forward to find the difference.
  4. Making a Friendly Number
This strategy involves rounding one of the numbers to the nearest 10, performing the subtraction, and then adjusting your answer.
  5. Standard Algorithm
Write the problem vertically. Start in the ones column and subtract, then move to the left and subtract at each column. If the top digit is less than the bottom digit and you have to regroup.
