Rounding Decimals

Use the Rounding Poem:

Find your number

Look right next door

4 or less just ignore

5 or more add one more

When rounding decimals, round up to the next digit in the sequence if the digit is equal to or greater than five.

This video looks at place value and rounding to various place values. It includes seven examples.

Use the following steps to round a decimal to a given place.

First, find the digit in the rounding place.

Next, look at the digit to the right of the rounding place. If the digit to the right of the rounding place is less than 5, round down, which means that the digit in the rounding place stays the same, and all digits to the right of the place become zero. If the digit to the right of the rounding place is greater than 5, round up, which means add 1 to the digit in the rounding place, and all digits to the right of the rounding place become zero.
