Free Online Worksheet to help students practice solving perimeter word problems for regular shapes and for rectangles.
Objective:
Perimeter refers to the total distance around the outside of a two-dimensional shape. It is calculated by adding up the lengths of all the sides of the shape.
A regular shape is a two-dimensional shape where all sides have equal length and all angles have equal measure. When calculating the perimeter of a regular shape we can either add the lengths of all the sides or we can find the length of one side and multiply by the number of sides.
When calculating the perimeter of a rectangle, we can add up the lengths of all the sides or we can use the formula
P = 2(l + w)
where P is the perimeter, l is the length, and w is the width. This formula works because a rectangle has two pairs of parallel sides, and each pair has the same length. Therefore, to find the perimeter, you can add up the lengths of all four sides, which is the same as adding up two lengths and two widths.
