If a non-metal takes part in a chemical reaction with oxygen it forms an oxide.
Most oxides of non-metals are soluble.
When they dissolve in water they form acids.

Reaction of Sulfur with Oxygen
Sulfur burns with a blue flame
Sulfur + oxygen → sulfur dioxide
sulfur dioxide + water → sulfuric acid



Combustion of Carbon in Oxygen
When carbon powder is heated in air it glows red.
If it is plunged into a gas jar of oxygen it become bright red.
carbon + oxygen → carbon dioxide
carbon dioxide + water → carbonic acid
