How to identify non-linear functions?

  1. By Graph:
Linear functions produce a straight-line graph.
Non-linear functions produce graphs that are not straight lines. This means the graph will be curved, have sharp turns, or exhibit other non-linear patterns.
  2. By Equation:
    A linear function has an equation of the form: y = ax + b or f(x) = ax + b
A non-linear function is any function whose equation cannot be put into this form. This often involves:
Exponents other than 1 on the variable
    Trigonometric functions
    Exponential functions
    Logarithmic functions
    Absolute value functions
    Rational functions
    Products of variables
  3. By Table of Values:
In a linear function, the rate of change between consecutive points is constant. This means that for equal changes in the x-values, the y-values will change by a constant amount.
In a non-linear function, the rate of change between consecutive points is not constant. The difference in y-values will vary even for equal differences in x-values.
