Examples, solutions, videos, and songs to help Grade 2 students learn how to determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.

Common Core: 2.OA.3

Suggested Learning Target

  • I can identify a group of objects as being even or odd using different strategies.
  • I can write an equation to show an even sum has the same addends (e.g., 5 + 5 = 10, 6 + 6 = 12).
  • I can use concrete materials to model the meaning of odd and even numbers.
  • I can write an equation to express an even number as the sum of two equal addends is the same as using doubles (e.g., 4 + 4 = 8, 7 + 7 = 14).
  • I can skip count by twos.

The following diagrams explain what are odd and even numbers. Scroll down the page for examples and songs.

Odd and Even Numbers

Even Numbers:
An even number is a number where everyone has a buddy. If you have that many items, you can always make them into pairs with no one left out.
Even numbers always end in (their last digit is) 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.
If you count by 2s (2, 4, 6, 8, 10…), you are always saying even numbers.

Odd Numbers:
An odd number is a number where there’s always one left over – one person who doesn’t have a buddy.
Odd numbers always end in (their last digit is) 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.

Odd and Even Numbers
Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members by matching.

How do you know if a number is odd or even?
If objects can be grouped in 2’s the number would be even. If objects can’t be grouped in 2’s the number would be odd.

Odd & Even Numbers
Even numbers can be cut into two or more equal groups
Odd numbers cannot be cut into two or more equal groups

Even Numbers always end with 2, 4, 6, 8, 0
Odd Numbers always end with 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

We can skip count by 2 to get the even or odd numbers.
We can use the “buddy” rule or partner system.

Odd and even numbers
A number is even if two people have the same amount.

Odd and Even Poems and Songs

Odd and Even Poem
Zero, two, four, six, eight
Being even is just great.
One, three, five, seven, nine
Being odd is just fine.

Even number song
This song reviews the concepts of even numbers (and helps teach the fact that all even numbers can be ‘split in half’)
Split em up,
Evens split,
Down the middle,
Split em up,
Evens split,
Say this rhyme…
Even numbers split,
Right down the middle,
Half and half,
Make even numbers
Every time

0, 2-4-6-8
0, 2-4-6-8
Say this rhyme,
If ANY number ends,
With one of those digits,
Then that number’s even,
Every time…

Odd number song
This song teaches the odd digits, and shows that any number ending in an odd digit is also odd.
Odd numbers
Odd numbers
Can’t be beat,
Those 5 digits,
Are so sweet…
Hey odd numbers!
Go odd numbers!
1,3,5,7,9
The only odd digits,
All the time!

Show me a number,
Odd on the end
Then that number’s,
Odd my friend.
