To compare the absolute values of integers, you need to understand what absolute value represents.

What is Absolute Value?
The absolute value of an integer is its distance from zero on the number line. It essentially tells you the magnitude of the number without considering its sign (positive or negative).

  • The absolute value of a positive integer is the integer itself. For example, the absolute value of 5 (written as |5|) is 5.
  • The absolute value of a negative integer is its positive counterpart. For example, the absolute value of -3 (written as |-3|) is 3.
  • The absolute value of zero (written as |0|) is 0.

The following diagram shows some examples of the absolute value of integers. Scroll down the page for more examples and solutions on absolute values.

Steps to Compare Absolute Values of Integers:

  1. Find the Absolute Value of Each Integer:
If the integer is positive or zero, its absolute value is the same as the integer.
If the integer is negative, its absolute value is the positive version of that integer (remove the negative sign).
  2. Compare the Resulting Non-Negative Values:
Once you have the absolute values, you can compare them just like you compare any two non-negative numbers.
