Column Addition with Regrouping
Column addition with regrouping is a method for adding multi-digit numbers by arranging them vertically in columns based on their place value. “Regrouping” (also known as carrying over) is used when the sum of a column is 10 or greater.

The following diagram gives an example of 2-digit column addition with regrouping. Scroll down the page for more examples and addition games.

Steps for 2-Digit Column Addition with Regrouping
Let’s use the example 38+26 to walk through the process.

  1. Arrange the numbers: Write the numbers one on top of the other, aligning the digits in their correct place value columns (ones and tens).
  2. Add the ones column: Start with the column on the far right—the ones column. Add the digits in this column: 8+6=14.
  3. Regroup: Since the sum is 10 or greater, you must regroup. The number 14 has a 4 in the ones place and a 1 in the tens place.
Write the 4 in the answer space under the ones column.
“Carry over” or “regroup” the 1 (which represents 10) to the top of the tens column.
  4. Add the tens column: Now, add the digits in the tens column, including the number you carried over.
    1+3+2=6.
Write the 6 in the answer space under the tens column.
    The final answer is 64.
