On the number line, moving to the right is positive.

On the number line, moving to the left is negative.

Simplifying Signed Operations

Remember these rules for paired signs when you need to do signed operations:
+   – –
–   + –
+   + +
–   – +
For example:

+ (– 3) = –3
– (+ 3) = –3
+ (+ 3) = +3
– (– 3) = +3
