Common Core: 7.RP.3

Suggested Learning Targets

  • I can calculate percentage of increase and percentage of decrease.
  • I can calculate simple interest, tax, markups and markdowns.
  • I can calculate percent increase and decrease.
  • I can calculate gratuities, commissions, and fees.
  • I can calculate percent error.
  • I can solve multi-step ratio and percent problems using proportional relationships.
  • I can justify multi-step ratio and percent in real life situations.
  • I can iIdentify or describe errors to given multi-step problems and present corrected solutions.
Use proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems (7.RP.3)

Interpreting Proportional Relationship Graphs (7.RP.3)
The following graph represents the distance traveled by 2 hikers. y represents distance in miles, and x represents time in hours. Find the unit rate for each hiker. Write an equation for each hiker's distance, and find the miles each hiker would travel after 15 hours. Which hiker's pace is faster? Percent Applications (7.RP.3)
In this lesson you will learn how to compute successive percentages by using proportions and equations.
Percent Increases
The population of bacteria in a lab experiment starts at 6,000 and grows by 14% per day.
How many new bacteria are created in 1 day?
Now many bacteria will there be 1 day into the experiment?

Percent Decreases
The value of a rare coin today is $230, but it's expected to decrease by 5% a year.
How much will the first year decrease be?
What will the coin be worth after 1 year?
