SAT Practice Test 8, Section 5: Questions 1 - 5

The following are worked solutions for the questions in the math sections of the SAT Practice Tests found in the Official SAT Study Guide.

It would be best that you go through the SAT practice test questions in the Study Guide first and then look at the worked solutions for the questions that you might need assistance in. Due to copyright issues, we are not able to reproduce the questions, but we hope that the worked solutions will be helpful.

1. Correct answer: (B)

Given:

To find:
The value of x

Solution:

It is not necessary to solve for x. We can see from the equation that x = 39

Answer: (B) 39

2. Correct answer: (E)

Given:
The table
Each letter represents the number of students in that category

To find:
The expression that is equal to z

Solution:
From the table, z is the total of m and t
z = m + t

From the table, m = k + n, t = r + s

So, z = k + n + r + s

Answer: (E) k+n+r+s

3. Correct answer: (C)

Given:
The figure showing the triangle ABC

To find:
The value of x

Solution:
Exterior angle of a triangle is equal to the sum of the opposite interior angles
25 + x = 60
x = 35

Answer: (C) 35

4. Correct answer: (D)

Given:
The cost of fixing the old refrigerator is $300
A new refrigerator costs $900 and will save the Martins $15 per month on electricity bills
If they buy the new refrigerator, in x months the Martins will have saved the difference between the cost of the new refrigerator and the cost of fixing the old one

To find:
The value of x

Solution:
The difference between the cost of the new refrigerator and the cost of fixing the old one is 900 – 300 = 600

Martins save $15 per month.

So, 15 × x = 600

Answer: (D) 40

5. Correct answer: (B)

Given:
The perimeter of equilateral triangle DEF is 3 times the perimeter of equilateral triangle DEF
The perimeter of triangle DEF = 10

To find:
The length of one side of triangle ABC

Solution:
Perimeter of triangle DEF = 10
Perimeter of triangle ABC = 3 × 10 = 30

Let x be the length of one side of triangle ABC
3x = 30
x = 10

Answer: (B) 10
