Dividing Numbers In Scientific Notation

To divide numbers in scientific notation:

Step 1 : Group the numbers together.

Step 2 : Divide the numbers.

Step 3 : Use the law of indices to simplify the powers of 10.

Step 4 : Give the answer in scientific notation.

Example:

Evaluate , giving your answer in scientific notation.

Solution:

Text Box: (group the numbers) = 2.3 (divide the numbers) = (law of indices: am ¸ an = am – n) = 2.3 ´ 10–1 (make sure answer is in scientific notation)

Example :

Evaluate 12.4 × 0.04, giving your answer in scientific notation.

Solution:

Text Box: 12.4 ¸ 0.04 = (group the numbers) = 0.31 (divide the numbers) = (law of indices: am ¸ an = am – n) = 0.31 ´ 10–1 = 3.1 ´ 10–2 (make sure answer is in scientific notation)
