Adding and Subtracting Decimals

In this lesson, we will look at adding and subtracting decimals.

 

 

Adding Decimals

To add two or more decimal numbers:

Step 1 : Arrange the digits of the decimals according to their place values. Make sure that the place values and the decimal points are aligned accordingly as shown in the example below.

Step 2 : Add the digits from right to left. The addition is the same as addition of whole numbers.

Example :

Evaluate 0.32 + 12.965 + 1.1

Solution:

Subtracting Decimals

To subtract two decimal numbers:

Step 1 : Arrange the digits of the decimals according to their place values. Make sure that the place values and the decimal points are aligned accordingly as shown in the example below.

Step 2 : Subtract the digits from right to left. The subtraction is the same as subtraction of whole numbers.

Example:

Evaluate 10.96 - 3.657

Solution:
